How the practice uses AI

This statement explains, in line with the HPCSA's guidance on artificial intelligence, when AI tools may be used, their limits, and how you stay in control.

In short

AI tools may help with paperwork. They never replace Dr Kana's clinical judgement. They are used only if you agree, and saying no does not affect your care in any way.

Where AI may be used

  • Referral summaries: preparing a draft summary of the information in a referral, so it can be read more quickly.
  • Consultation notes: preparing a draft clinical note from a consultation recording, for consultations with patients in South Africa.

These tools are not yet in clinical use. They will be switched on only after a regulatory opinion on whether they are a medical device has been obtained.

What AI never does

  • Diagnose, or decide on treatment
  • Decide which referrals are seen first
  • Communicate with you on Dr Kana's behalf
  • Make any decision about you by automated means alone

Human oversight

Every AI-assisted draft is marked as unverified until Dr Kana has checked it against the original documents, corrected any errors and signed it. AI tools can make mistakes, and Dr Kana remains fully responsible for every clinical note and decision.

Your choice

You are asked before any AI tool is used, and neither option is pre-selected. If you decline, your referral or consultation is handled by hand, with the same quality, priority and timing. You may withdraw your consent at any time.

Your data

Information processed by AI tools is handled under a written data processing agreement, may be processed outside South Africa, and is not used to train AI models. Recordings used to prepare notes are deleted once the note has been created. See the privacy notice.

Regulation

The practice follows the HPCSA's ethical guidance on the use of artificial intelligence, POPIA Section 71 on automated decision-making, and the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority's requirements for software as a medical device.
