Planning your trip

Travelling to Johannesburg involves cost, time away from home and often a medical aid approval. The rooms help you plan the practical side before you book anything.

How it works

  1. Your doctor at home sends a referral letter and your scans through the secure referral portal.
  2. The referral is reviewed, and the practice discusses it with your referring doctor. Your doctor remains responsible for your care in your home country.
  3. The rooms contact you to plan the logistics: suitable dates, the hospital, what to bring, medical aid paperwork and travel documents.
  4. Your consultation, examination and any treatment decisions take place in person in Johannesburg.

What the travel planning call covers

  • Appointment dates and how long you may need to stay
  • Which hospital you will attend and how to get there
  • Documents your medical aid or insurer asks for
  • Visa and travel paperwork
  • Accommodation and arrival information

What it does not cover

The call is administrative. Dr Kana does not diagnose, triage or give medical advice to patients outside South Africa. Questions about your symptoms, medication or whether treatment is right for you are answered at your in-person consultation, or by your own doctor at home.

If your condition worsens

If your symptoms change or you feel unwell before travelling, contact your own doctor or your nearest emergency department. Do not wait for your appointment in Johannesburg.
