Medical evacuation and urgent transfer

Urgent cross-border transfers are arranged between the referring hospital, the air ambulance provider and the receiving hospital. This page gives general information for referring clinicians.

Arranging a transfer

Air ambulance transfers are arranged by the referring hospital or the patient's funder with a licensed air ambulance provider. The provider, route and receiving facility are confirmed by them, depending on the patient's condition.

Clinician-to-clinician handover

For urgent transfers, the referring doctor should speak directly with the admitting team at the receiving hospital before the patient is moved. The following information supports a safe transfer:

  • Airway status, including whether the patient is intubated or has a tracheostomy
  • Vital signs, oxygen requirement and level of consciousness
  • Imaging (DICOM) and laboratory results
  • Funder details and guarantee of payment for the transfer and admission
  • Next-of-kin contact details

Admission on arrival

Admission arrangements, including whether the patient is received through the emergency department or directly into a ward or intensive care, are agreed with the receiving hospital during clinician handover.
